After School and Summer Programming
*Present programming is online to adapt to 2020 distance learning SFUSD guidelines at Bessie Carmichael FEC PreK-8
The FEC Galing Bata Program at Bessie Carmichael/Filipino Education Center (FEC) provides gabay (guidance), lingap (care) and bantay (protection) to TK-8th students during the school day, after school and summer. For the past 19 years, we’ve provided linguistically sensitive and culturally responsive programming and services to all interested Bessie/FEC students and their families primarily Filipino immigrant and Filipino American youth who are low-income, English learners, underperforming or disconnected from school, unhoused, living in transition, and/or exposed to violence, abuse, or trauma.
Our current Filipino enrichments are Filipino 101: "Usap Tayo!" (Conversational Filipino); Filipino Arts and Stories; and Filipino Wellness.
Please support 19 more years of the Galing Bata Program and promote bilingual education for students in San Francisco. Maraming salamat po! Thank you very much!
Filipino WLES Push In Support
A Monday-Friday, school-day service that Galing Bata provides for the Bessie Carmichael Elementary School/FEC. GB Staff come in and help Bessie/FEC K-5th students who need the Filipino Language support while doing their classwork. They also help students with building their skills in reading, writing and comprehension in the Filipino language.
Barkada Biyernes
A safe space and a stress free zone to chill, unwind, play games, eat lunch, learn Filipino values and be in the company of peers and Ate’s & Kuya’s. Everyone is welcome to join us! Make chika, make sama sama, and make jolly saya with us! This program was created in response to supporting the mental health needs of our Filipinx students.
GB Chikahan Good Vibes
A weekly support group and dedicated space for Galing Bata parents and families to get to know each other and build friendships. Our needs assessments and wellness checks during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and shelter-in-place determined that parents and guardians are also in need of a support group to help with their mental health during this time of uncertainty and changes.
Additional Historical Programming
Junior Counselors
A mentorship program for 7th and 8th graders every summer wherein they get to be an Ate, Kuya or Kasama to the younger students in Galing Bata. They learn different skills such as conflict resolution, how kids learn, doing assigned tasks, event planning, fundraising projects, work ethics and being responsible.
Pulong Tulong
A monthly gathering of Galing Bata parents/guardians wherein they get to know each other, build community and eat delicious Filipino food together while learning about different topics that they expressed interest in like academic strategies, self care, family strengthening activities, parenting, financial literacy, higher education readiness and preparation, etc.
SoMapagmahal
A spring semester workshops series from 2017-2020, SoMapagmahal (“so very loving”; “South of Market” and “loving, caring, and empathetic” in Tagalog) infuses photography with Filipinx and ethnic studies, urban studies, and SOMA Pilipinas history to teach students about the importance of taking ownership of telling our own stories. Students learn how to use film and digital cameras, develop a group exhibition, and publish our signature Brown Joy Zine.
