"Quality Care, Quality Guidance, and Quality Protection"
Since 2001, the FEC Galing Bata Bilingual Program provides quality guidance, care, and protection (gabay, lingap, bantay) to students from transitional kindergarten to the eight grade at Bessie Carmichael Filipino Education Center Pre K - 8.
FEC Galing Bata programming harmonizes children's culturally and linguistically sensitive development by promoting biliteracy in English and Filipino (Tagalog) through enrichment activities, academic support and engagement in our larger multicultural community.
All students are welcome to participate in the Galing Bata program, and may email us to apply at: galingbata.fec@gmail.com.
Galing Bata is a vital part of San Francisco's SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District in the South of Market.
The history of the Galing Bata Bilingual Program originates from the Filipino Education Center (FEC). The FEC is originally a newcomer center that was established in the mid 1970's to help meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of newly arrived immigrant children as they adjust to their new environment.
Parents, families, teachers, and community advocated to have a Filipino bilingual after school program at FEC. This resulted in the formation of FEC Galing Bata (the term, coined by local historical MC Canlas), aimed to promote literacy development in English and Filipino, multicultural education, and a strong school, family, and community collaboration. FEC Galing Bata furthers FECβs legacy in serving not only newcomer children but also U.S. born children and families interested in bilingual education.
FEC Galing Bata continues to serve the needs of the students, families, and community through providing vital, linguistically sensitive and culturally response services and resources in SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District in San Francisco.
FEC Galing Bataβs after school program at Bessie Carmichael Filipino Education Center Pre-K-8 is in coordination with the Bessie FEC Beacon as an important component of the school.
The program is provided at both the Bessie Carmichael Elementary Campus on 7th Street and at the Bessie Carmichael Middle School FEC Campus on Harrison Street. These schools are the only San Francisco Unified School District public schools located in South of Market.
In 2000, the FEC received the Seal of Excellence award from the California Association for Bilingual Education for its outstanding academic, bilingual and parental involvement programs, as well as the Honor Roll School award from the San Francisco School Volunteers for its exemplary school-community collaboration.
